A wonderful family home: Victorian elegance meets contemporary style
Owners Notes
9 May Street, North Fitzroy has been a wonderful family home for the last 15 years. We have always lived in the area and upsized to this home with a growing family in 2002.
In carrying out a major renovation in 2006 we wanted to exploit the north facing rear aspect and create a flexible living space with lots of natural light and an indoor-outdoor feel. The high ceilings, bi-fold doors, and large window were key ingredients of that vision.
The back room has been a multi-function entertainment area. It is always fun to peel the doors open and have an informal get together on a balmy evening! Hosting family Christmases became an annual event. Our most memorable was seating 36 people at a single table made up in a big U shape, and having a fabulous long lunch.
Our kids have loved their large bedrooms and the TV room, which they have put to a variety of uses over the years. When they disappeared out there for hours, the rest of the house became a very peaceful place, but we could still easily keep an eye on them! They have loved having sleepovers out there when they have friends over.
The blackbirds that have nested in the jasmine for the last few years are remarkably attuned to the seasons. In early spring they rebuild their nest just as the jasmine begins to sprout and so hide the home in which they raise their chicks.
The house is very functional. The abundance of storage extends to the large laundry, which also features two large built-in clothes baskets. The large drying cupboard is a godsend on rainy days!
Our home is a quiet oasis from the hive of activity in the inner north. There are plenty of great bars, restaurants and cafes within easy walking distance: we love Long Play, Underwood, Supermaxi, Matteo’s, Pope Joan and the recently reborn Mary Miller, just around the corner. And then there is Queen’s Parade, and the Northcote cinema!
There is an abundance of public transport – Nicholson Street and St. George’s Road trams and the South Morang line from Merri station. But we love to run/walk/cycle – to work in the city, along the Merri Creek trail, through Yarra Bend Park, or along the Park Street bike path and around Princes Park.
