Owners Notes
What we love about this home:
119 Maltravers Road is a fantastic family home with a rare combination of space and character. The location is excellent, with two railway stations within a short walk (Eaglemont and Ivanhoe). Three shopping strips – Ivanhoe, Ivanhoe East, and Eaglemont – can also be easily reached on foot.
The house was built in the early 1920s for a returning World War I soldier and his wife. Since then it has had only three owners, including my family. The original owner’s widow lived here until the 1970s. The second owner added the second storey in the early 1990s and it was done in a way that was sympathetic to the house’s character. The upper storey has many period features, including art deco and cedar doors, and high ceilings. Many visitors to the house do not even realise that the second storey is not original. The house also has original and rare features, particularly downstairs, including original fretwork, handmade wooden joinery, two fireplaces, and a crafted, extra-wide staircase that is a striking central focus. There are also two large balconies that provide views over the area.
The house is on a 741sq .meter block with a deep backyard that can be viewed from the kitchen and main living area. We updated the house extensively, re-paving the drive, landscaping the garden, re-painting the interior and exterior, re-sanding and polishing the wooden floor boards, and installing air-conditioning. The backyard contains a weatherboard shed that provides useful storage. It also has character and was the original house’s laundry, before it was rolled down the backyard on wine bottles!”
