Owners Notes

The History:

The Carters Arms opened its doors in 1873 and operated as a pub for around 40 years. Just before WW1, the Temperance movement successfully lobbied for the closure of this and many other establishments in Collingwood. Our distinctive corner building became a home during the 1990s.

The Home:

We have lived here for 10 years and loved it.

Light streams in through the north-facing windows with great views upstairs over the rooftops to the shot tower and church spire in Clifton Hill. There’s also a city view from the deck (great for the fireworks).

The home is very private. Low-E, semi-reflective coatings are applied to the double-glazed windows throughout. With translucent glass at street level, this means it’s all about looking out not looking in!

The climate control is amazing. With hydronic heating, double-glazing and honeycomb blinds throughout, you never feel the cold that the original residents surely would have. The ducted air conditioning upstairs is incredibly quiet and efficient during those Melbourne heatwaves

It’s great for entertaining. As well as hosting intimate dinners with friends, we’ve had occasional parties of 40-50 people which this place accommodates nicely. We love the setup of the kitchen, bar and dining (along with those great views while cooking).

The downstairs bathroom makes you feel like you’re in a day spa and the huge master bedroom adds another touch of luxury not often found in the inner city. It’s a joy to wake up to the soft easterly light and beautiful sunrises.

Security is second-to-none. HD cameras, alarm and security bars mean the property is truly lock up and leave.

The rest of the home speaks for itself – it is a sizeable, comfortable and stylish architect-designed home with quality joinery and finishes. There’s even a permit for a roof terrace obtained in 2004 by previous owners – the 360 degree views up there are spectacular!

The location:

This one is easy. Collingwood may offer the best inner city lifestyle in Australia. Over the years we’ve watched Smith Street and Gertrude Street become the place to be seen with a great collection of shops, cafes and restaurants. Our faves include Cibi café, Everyday Coffee, The Gem Bar, Paradise Alley, The Fox, Bar Liberty, Rita’s, Dr Morse, Napier Quarter, South of Johnston and Marion. Less than 10 minutes walk is Victoria Park with the Yarra River, Abbotsford Convent and Collingwood Children’s Farm not far beyond. It’s hard to believe these tranquil places are still in the inner city. And one last thing… the Collingwood Arts Precinct will be truly exciting for the area.
