Owners Notes

We were drawn to the quiet Sumner Estate location nestled near parkland between Northcote and North Fitzroy. We love our locals – Piedimonte’s and SuperMaxi in North Fitzroy, and Babka and Alimentari in Fitzroy all within a few minutes’ walk or drive. We love that the Sumner Estate has a sense of community, with the Sumner Mail used as a plea for a cup of sugar (or a spare battery or charging cable), or to announce that lemons or limes or herbs have been left in the Share Shed. It’s location for trains an trams is second to none.

In renovating our home, we loved its generous Californian Bungalow proportions and the period references to the front of the house, with high ceilings, decorative fireplace in the master bedroom, floorboards and leadlight front door. We kept our additions simple and pared back. Small format marble tiles in the bathrooms, classic Carrara Marble to the benchtops. The three-step transition to the 3.5m high glass pavilion kitchen/living/dining space is always a delight. Floorboards make way for a heated polished concrete floor. The floor to ceiling glass expands the living space to the edge of the garden. The garden hedging means the living room is always open and bright, but always private. This is our oasis – cool in summer and warm in front of the open fire in winter. The garden is designed to give us a green backdrop throughout the seasons. Our favourite element is the brick wall in the corner, which covers in ivy in spring, turns red in autumn and reveals the heritage brickwork in winter.
