Keeping an eye on your cats and dogs
Do you own a dog? Maybe a cat? How about something more exotic like a parakeet or a turtle? According to the Australian Veterinary Association, our country has one of the highest pet ownership figures in the world – 63 per cent.
Dogs make up 39 per cent of these household pets, and cats take second place at 29 per cent. Fish, birds, smaller mammals and even smaller reptiles make up the bulk of the rest. So we’ve got a lot of critters running around our Melbourne real estate, that seems to be certain. But have you remembered to give them special care this summer?
Dog day afternoons
The City of Boroondara has been issuing reminders to people living in Kew and nearby areas to keep a mindful eye on their pets when the mercury rises. There are a number of things you can do to keep your pets cool, even a few that you might have thought were reserved for us humans!
- Keep plenty of shade and cool, fresh water around for pets
- Use sunscreen! A pet-safe variety, of course
- Don’t leave your pets in cars – we all know how hot they can get
- Watch out for heated asphalt, which can hurt a pets’ paws
Pets should be treated a lot like how we like to be treated on the extra-hot days – not forced to do any exercise, plenty of shade and sunscreen, and some cold refreshments. Moving into Melbourne’s best suburbs (like Kew and surrounds) is a great move for any family. The central eastern areas of Melbourne are rife with parks where pets can play.
However, you’ve got to make sure they stay safe in the sun. Don’t forget to add a little sunscreen to your own coat as well! For more information on these parts of Melbourne, don’t even think twice about getting in touch – give us a call.
