Nelson Alexander's guide to Melbourne winter 2018
Melbourne may have a reputation for its fickle weather – particularly when temperatures plummet and the wind roars. But that doesn’t mean the city can’t be enjoyed year-round!
At Nelson Alexander, our team knows how to get out and appreciate Australia’s most liveable city, even when the elements are working against us. There’s always something on, which is why we’ve sat down and come up with these five essential activities to get you through the rest of winter.
1. Heide Museum of Modern Art: Design For Life Exhibition
Head to Bulleen to explore the work of Australia’s most significant designers, Grant and Mary Featherstone whose innovative designs in the 1950’s and 60’s brought modernism into the homes of Australians. Make a day of it by taking a tour of the museum, having lunch at Cafe Heide and weather permitting, walking through the stunning gardens and sculpture park. The Design for Life exhibition at Heide MOMA will run until 7th October and admission is included with your museum pass.
2. The winter night market
It wouldn’t be a winter in Melbourne without a trip to the Winter Night Market at the Queen Victoria Market. One of the city’s most bustling precincts, the Queen Victoria Market remains the place to score a mouth-watering meal, check out craft and jewelry stalls and enjoy acts from local musicians and street performers throughout the chilly months.
3. Rare books week
One event our team is super excited for is Rare Book week, running from 29 June – 8 August at the University of Melbourne in Parkville. The University will host more than 40 events during the week, including tours, free lectures, exhibitions and workshops with Australian and international literary experts.
4. MoMa at NGV
The NGV always delivers top-notch exhibitions and this year they’ve given us a true winter masterpiece: MoMa. Celebrating 130 years of modern and contemporary art from New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMa), this is not one to be missed. Fortunately, you have plenty of time – the series wraps up in October – so be sure to get to the NGV and see some of MoMa’s most impressive acquisitions, including work by Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Cezanne.
5. Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF)
Opening on 2 August, MIFF will continue to do what it’s done since 1952: bring world-class cinema to Melbourne. This year the festival will screen documentaries, shorts and international features, as well as a number of kid-friendly films.
