Victorian state Government promises extensive new rail loop
Victorian State Premier Daniel Andrews has announced plans for a $50 billion rail loop that will connect every major line in Melbourne and include 12 new underground stations. If re-elected in November, the state government aims to begin planning the massive project by 2019 and building by 2022.
What does this mean for the future of Melbourne?
12 Major Stations linking all of Melbourne
The proposed line is 90 kilometres in length, including new stations in: Werribee, Sunshine, Melbourne Airport, Broadmeadows, Fawkner, Reservoir, Bundoora, Heidelberg, Doncaster, Box Hill, Burwood, Glen Waverley, Monash, Clayton and Cheltenham.
Currently residents must travel into the city to access rail services to outer suburbs and the airport, which can be time consuming. The proposal includes plans for transport super hubs at Clayton and Broadmeadows, major links at Monash, La Trobe, Werribee and Sunshine, as well as a link to the airport line the state government has also promised.
It’ll make commuting and traveling around our favourite city fringe suburbs like Kew, Ivanhoe, Preston and Pascoe Vale easier and quicker whether you’re catching the train or driving. If elected, the state government has estimated the line will be completed by 2051.

Future-proofing Melbourne transport
Melbourne is likely to eclipse Sydney as Australia’s most populous city by 2030 or earlier, and is one of the fastest growing regions in the country. It’s essential that our city is prepared so that it maintains the same world-leading livability despite its growth.
Along with other infrastructure projects, this rail link promises to future-proof our public transport system to do just that. It’s been billed as the biggest transformation of public transport in Australia’s history, and will carry up to 400,000 passengers a day. More importantly, it will remove 200,000 car trips from major roads, and boost the Melbourne economy by providing 20,000 jobs.
This project is still just a promise, dependent on the election result. However, it does signal a bright future, where Melbourne continues to evolve into Australia’s leading global city.
