Owners Notes

We met celebrated architect Robert Simeoni before the purchase of 19 Drummond Street in 2007. Robert advised us of what we might do with the property and, after acquiring it, we engaged him to bring this vision to life. So began a rigorous two-year design period, followed by two years of construction.

The brief was simple: extend the existing terrace house, giving as much light and as many walls for hanging art as possible. The old part of the house, dating from around 1870, must be considered and not ignored. It and the vibrant fresh addition should embrace each other and allow a seamless transition from the old to the new, and back again. The house should be both functional and beautiful, reminiscent of classic Italian architecture.

We wanted a work of art; Robert delivered exactly that.

The home, particularly the extension, has no actual views, except for the knock-out roof terrace. Robert’s sleight of hand makes the house look at itself, constantly offering lines of sight which pierce the structure from front to back. These tantalize the eye and give the illusion of space and depth, and further relate old and new. Interior light wells and courtyard gardens bring the life of plants into the house, and full height glass windows invite in the sky as a miraculous backdrop to daily life.

It is a joy and a privilege to inhabit such a space.
