Owners Notes

What do you love about the home?

When we bought the home, we were drawn to the warmth and period character. Over the years we extended the property to make use of the north facing block and accommodate our growing family. We love the light filled extension and outdoor space sheltered from the street. The plantings allow dappled light in summer, the grape vines are the perfect natural shade for summer BBQs. The plantings allow maximum light in winter and the flowering cherry is just stunning in spring.

It is a great home for entertaining. We love the way the rooms are linked but not completely open plan and the way the bi-fold doors lead to the courtyard. The upstairs living zone is the perfect place for the kids to build their fort cubbies, jigsaws and spread out. It has a great reading and study nook too.

The downstairs front lounge is a fabulous winter haven to get cosy in front of the fire with a good book and favourite drink. We love the even temperature hydronic heating provides and we put 5.95kW of solar panels on the roof. This produces more power than we use each year, even with the air conditioning in the main living zones.

We love having generous robes in all the bedrooms and ample storage. From the ‘Nania’ attic, to the ‘Harry Potter’ cupboard under the stairs. There is even a lift-up store under the bike storage for less day-to-day items. The dedicated study made the transition to working from home easy.

It has been a wonderful home to watch our family grow and to entertain family and friends in all seasons.

What do you love about the area?

We love our home is walking distance to both Primary and High Schools. There are many families in the street so there is a real sense of community. The kids in the street all walk to school together each morning. We also have a few local elders who have loads of knowledge about area. Our home is walking distance to trams, buses, and trains to get all over wider Melbourne while being just a stroll to great restaurants, cafes, bars, Preston Market, movies or even bowling! There are loads of parks and playgrounds within walking distance including two of Preston’s off lead dog parks. GH Mott reserve is the closest and perfect for kicking a footy.

Garden
The front and rear gardens are such enjoyable spaces to sit within and look out upon. We deliberately chose a casual planting style to minimise garden maintenance and to plant more freely. We will really miss our garden and the countless conversations in it over the years. It has over 14 fruit trees including a dual grafted blood plum, apricot, cherry, nectarine, peach apples, pears, lemon, lime, fig and an avocado tree that is the envy of the street!

The garden also has pockets with raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, rhubarb and even asparagus. The passionfruit vine is prolific. We love that our bountiful garden does not look like an orchard, and we can pick flowers and foliage all year round for vases inside. The pollinators encourage maximum produce, and it makes the garden a little oasis. We love the various bulbs that flower in late winter/spring and the roses in the front that suit the heritage of the house.

We love we can pick fresh herbs when cooking from under the lemon tree and grow vegetables all year round in the wicking bed in the courtyard. Even if we head away in summer the wicking bed keeps things watered while gone and allows digging without fear of irrigation hoses. The rest of the garden has zoned automatic watering system.
