Authentic Carlton character, renovated with distinction

This imposing residence, distinguished by an elaborate Victorian baroque façade, is one of Carlton's oldest residences. Originally a simple 1850s cottage owned by Patrick Costello (ancestor of Peter and Tim Costello), it was significantly rebuilt in the 1890s. Subsequent owners include the publisher Di Gribble, whose friend the celebrated author Helen Garner wrote The First Stone in the studio at the rear. Meticulously renovated by its current owners to combine Victorian elegance with light-filled modern style, the house - with a substantial 2-level studio with its own entrance from Little Barkly Street - is ideally suited to both family and work-from-home living.
Opening from an arched hallway are elegant formal sitting and dining rooms, both with deep cornices, OFPs, and ornate overmantels; a seamless transition to the rear introduces a light-filled informal living and dining room with rich tallowwood floors, open to a stylish kitchen equipped with Portofino benchtops and NEFF/Miele appliances. A handsome staircase crowned by a lantern ceiling ascends to three double bedrooms, a fitted study, stylish bathroom/laundry and powder room. Opening north from the study, a magnificent roof garden entertainer's terrace offering dress-circle views of CBD fireworks displays; to the other side a lined loft supplements the home's generous storage space. A sunny courtyard garden paved in Brazilian quartz separates the house from its former servants' quarters, now a versatile space incorporating a studio, fourth bedroom, second bathroom and cellar. In a quiet street of heritage homes within easy walking distance to the CBD, Carlton Gardens, Melbourne University and Lygon Street, this exceptional residence features remarkable period detail, heating, air conditioning and quality appointments. Owners Notes

What we love about this home:

We first saw 100 Barkly Street in March 1994 and immediately fell in love with it. The imposing Italianate façade sits impressively in an intact streetscape of Victorian home’s.

The house has been a vibrant family home. My son lived in the rear studio while he was at university. This gave him freedom of access from Little Barkly Street. My daughter loved having her friends stay over. As with all families, they move on.

The home has seen many changes throughout the past twenty-three years. Every room has been updated, with the mezzanine and rooftop deck added to the mix. This is used for BBQ lunches, friends watching New Year’s Eve fireworks, as well as providing a quiet place to escape and read a book.

The kitchen dining room is the hub of the house and was completely renovated in 2013. It has quality appliances and cabinetry and is a great place to create culinary delights, enjoying views into the leafy Tuscan style courtyard.

The front formal lounge has tremendous atmosphere with its original black oriental period mantel piece and beautiful lamp lighting. Sitting by an open fire; is a delight on a winter’s day. The dining room is one of my special places for a candle light dinner with friends, or simply enjoying with my wife, an evening meal complemented by wine, firelight and quiet music.

Stop and listen… you will be amazed at how quiet the house is, being in the middle of Melbourne’s vibrant restaurant scene.

Everything is walking distance. It takes seventeen minutes to walk to Myer, forty to Southbank or the MCG.

Ten minutes to Melbourne University and RMIT. The medical profession is all around.

An important aspect is that parking is available when friends visit. This is a rarity in inner Melbourne. The street is virtually closed at Carlton Street and the only real traffic is the bike brigade riding to work. There is a wonderful community atmosphere in the area.

We are sad to have to down size and move on. However, for someone who loves inner Melbourne life… this is a great opportunity!
