Owners Notes
What we love about this home
I bought this, my first home, about 13 years ago. It was love at first sight! I had been looking for over a year, but as soon as I saw this, I knew it was the one for me and immediately made an offer. It has an amazing feel, something most people comment on when they first visit. This clicker brick home had all the things I loved, a mixture of some period features with mod cons, lots of natural light, a beautiful fireplace with a gorgeous mantle and shelving which gives the lounge room character, lovely deep framed windows and picture rails. There are three good sized bedrooms and three separate outdoor areas which I’ve enjoyed transforming in to useable spaces over the years. The courtyard garden has a fantastic deck off the living room, where we’ve enjoyed BBQs and get togethers and a further outdoor space where the carport opens to the backyard creating an entertainment area that has been the site of quite a lot of parties. Over the years I’ve created a comfortable, warm, homey space. I have absolutely loved living here and I’ve shed more than a few tears about letting it go, but we really need to upsize. This has been such a great house, it’s well built, solid and reliable, from the “don’t make them like they used to” era. It was well maintained before I bought it and has been well loved and cared for since.
History
The house was built in the 1960s and this was the original building on a large block of land. It used to be zoned as East Preston, but became Reservoir before I bought. The original owners eventually retired and moved interstate. Developers then bought the house, renovated it and built two one-bedroom units, each with a court yard, at the back of the property. I bought from the developers. The two units were sold shortly after I bought mine. The units are owner occupied and the owners have lived here as long as I have, approximately 13 years. The neighbours are lovely and quiet.
What we love about this suburb:
Reservoir/Preston is the best place to live and I’m hoping to stay in this area. We’re so close to the city and anything you need is easily accessible. Public transport is on your doorstep, trams, trains and a bus hub at Northland with transport to most parts of Melbourne. This home is absolutely perfectly positioned and is in a court which is nice and quiet. At the end of the street there are walking tracks, sports facilities and parklands that are usually covered in hundreds of parrots and water birds most mornings; you can sometimes even hear kookaburras from the bedroom. Northland shopping centre, Darebin Community Health Centre, various schools, buses and trams are all walking distance. It’s a five-minute drive to the Preston Market, High Street shopping strip and Summerhill shopping centre. It is such a convenient and pretty place to live, and has easy access to great restaurants and cafes. The lifestyle is what really sets this area and the court location apart.
One of my Saturday rituals is to take a walk among the parrots in the morning, then have breakfast and do my shopping at Preston market. We eat out quite a bit and have found some amazing restaurants in the local area. There are so many, we still haven’t tried them all. It’s a beautiful life in Mattea Court.
