Owners Notes
I’ve been privileged to live at 595 Drummond Street for the last ten years. Once a working man’s pub, the building is a proud, solid Victorian. It has a northerly aspect, and I love the sunshine and light that fills every room.
When I first bought the property in 2011 it was a publishing house. I knew it would make a wonderful home, but removing the office partitions and desks has been a lot of work. Now the hard work is done, and the building is restored and very comfortable.
Unlike most old places, there is good storage space – only an advantage if you can avoid collecting too much stuff! And over the years the cellar has housed a lot of family stuff. The garage has also been good for storage. I had intended parking my small car there, but the garage was always full, and I never had any trouble getting a park on the street.
Actually, in Carlton North you can get by without a car. I use the tram on Lygon Street and the bus on Rathdowne Street, and I enjoy walking to the city through Carlton Gardens.
One of my favourite spaces in the house is the courtyard. I’m not sure which season is best: spring has the bougainvillea, early summer the perfumed star jasmine, then the crepe myrtle, and in autumn the red ornamental grape is gorgeous.
A bonus of living at 595 is the neighbourhood. Of course, there are the nearby parks and the Rathdowne Village, with its delightful coffee shops and wine bars, but best of all are the great neighbours. I enjoyed being involved in setting up the tiny community garden on the corner, and now my neighbour has the local kids growing sweet corn there.
595 Drummond Street has been a wonderful home which I’ve been able to share with my family. But now it’s time for me to move to a smaller place.
