Owners Notes

LOVE ABOUT THE HOME

This house has been our family home for 9 years and we have absolutely loved living here.

When we first bought the house, we knew it would be the perfect place to raise our young family. We were drawn to its light-filled rooms, high ceilings and spaciousness. We were also drawn to its warmth and cosiness, which we’ve enhanced with good quality insulation. It’s a thermally comfortable home throughout the year, with split systems in four rooms which make it easy to control the temperature. The main living room with a central gas-log fireplace is the perfect place to curl up and watch a movie on a cold winter's night.

The back living space has been another favourite room in the house. We refer to it as ‘the play room’ but it has also been used as a study, a sewing room, a music room, a space for yoga and is also the ideal place to have a cup of tea and look out to the garden at any time of day.

The natural light and airiness of the house is also something we’ve loved about it. The orientation allows sunlight through the house in both the summer and winter months. The north facing veggie patches and brick wall are perfect for growing citrus and lots of different kinds of vegetables.

The gardens have been tended to lovingly and we will miss them very much! The veggie patches have given us an abundance of produce over the years and the wicking beds are amazing for growing vegetables with little need for watering. A wonderful place for children to play, the back garden has been a sanctuary and we’ve enjoyed many fun parties and family gatherings here. The front garden has been set up using permaculture principles as a ‘food forest’ and you’ll find an abundance of fruit, herbs, natives and berries growing there. It is a low maintenance garden that attracts butterflies and beautiful native birds, and has different flowering plants for all year-round colour. The large bottlebrush/callistemon on the nature strip is a special tree which is home to some beautiful birds and provides important shade from the western sun in summer.  Whilst pottering in the front garden, there are always friendly chats with neighbours which is certainly something we will greatly miss about living on Mashoobra St.

LOCATION

This area of Coburg North, better known amongst locals as Merlynston (or ‘Merlo’ as it’s affectionately called), is a quiet, welcoming and safe neighbourhood, which has a very strong sense of community. There is a village-feel about Merlo  and you’ll quickly get to know your friendly neighbours, whether there is  food being dropped off, produce from the garden being swapped, tools being shared or bumping into one-another up at the village or at one of the many local parks. The Merlynston village is a great community hub, which has two cafes, a pharmacy, post-office and small supermarket, along with the community hall which holds numerous events including weekly ‘No Lights/No Lycra’ dancing sessions, band performances, art-shows and other community gatherings. All of this within a 5-minute walk.

There is a lot of green space, parks and playgrounds in the area and the Merri-Creek is a short walk/ bike-ride away. Merlynston train station which runs along the Upfield line is just 6 mins walk from the house, which makes it incredibly easy to get to/from the city, which is only 25 mins on the train. The newly upgraded Upfield bike path running under the raised train line makes access to Coburg, Brunswick and the city by bike a quick and enjoyable ride. The Pentridge cinemas and Saturday Coburg farmers market are both easily accessible, as are some great little places for weekend treats like Back Alley Bakes (amazing coffee, sourdough and pastries!) and the new gin distillery, Cedar Fox Distillers.
