Nights of netball and movies in Melbourne

If you’re moving to Melbourne, you might want to enjoy some of the fun events happening around the area this summer. It’s definitely a great way to make some new friends and get to know the community. Have a tight budget? That’s not a problem. The best part of these events is that they’re free!

Netball for newbies

Feel like getting your blood pumping? As an initiative created in partnership with VicHealth, Rock Up Netball’s Dockland’s Train is a great way to play a few rounds of the sport in a friendly, social environment. Not to mention, this is a perfect way for newbies to learn the game and get stuck in, as the program will teach participants some basic skills.

This event will be held from February 25 to March 3 over four Thursday night sessions at the Docklands netball court at 80 Harbour Esplanade. Anyone over the age of 15 is welcome to come to some or all of these nights.

Night at the movies

Maybe you’re not so much in the mood to sweat as you are to sit back and enjoy some sights and sounds. If that’s you, be sure to stop by the Kathleen Syme Library on February 20, where the Summer Shorts competition will be held. Remember to bring a snack too, as you’ll be treated to movies made by 15 to 25-year-old locals.

The theme this year is ‘On the verge’. Judges will also be attending to pick out a winner, where prizes of $500 to $750 will be awarded to the best films. Viewers at the screening night will get the chance to vote for their favourite, which will receive the People’s Choice Award.

Not only will you be showing your support to young, up-and-coming film makers, but you may also find many interesting parts of your neighbourhood being featured in these movies.

Moving into the city? Give the friendly team at Nelson Alexander a ring if you want to take a look at housing in some of the best suburbs in Melbourne.
