Owners Notes
Deciding to say goodbye to 15 Sturt Street has been one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make. It’s been a wonderful home for the past 8 years, and an equally incredible neighbourhood in which to live. I’ve often said to people that it’s hard to seek out a street like Sturt Street; you just have to stumble upon it. We know almost every household on the street and hold an annual progressive dinner and street party – as well as sharing many a coffee, wine or meal on each other’s back deck or loungeroom. It’s a tight-knit community, made up of residents of varying ages who look out for each other.
Sturt Street is uniquely placed in that is has very little car traffic, but plenty of foot traffic passing by the front veranda. This creates a quietly bustling atmosphere with passers-by heading to the train or the coffee shops. I duck down the road most days for a sandwich or coffee, or to pop in to the supermarket; all are within a five-minute walk. Only slightly further afield are the Capital City Trail, Maribyrnong River, Flemington Racecourse and Showgrounds.
I was drawn to Number 15 from the outset by its wide double-frontage, beautiful Edwardian pressed-metal ceilings and stained-glass window in the entry. Over more than eight years of ownership, I’ve aimed to make improvements to all areas of the house – with structural changes (new roof, re-stumping, a new veranda and fencing), cosmetic changes (painting inside and out, a refurbished fireplace, new carpets, doors and front and back landscaping), and lifestyle changes (a new back deck, brand new bathroom).
The house benefits from a flood of northern light into the bedrooms, and a secluded entertaining space on the expansive back deck. The large shed offers ample storage and a second toilet, with potential to turn into a studio space or home office. The rooms inside are generous and bright, perfectly blending period charm with modern conveniences.
