Owners Notes
We bought this house as a young couple, lured by its heritage charm, spacious living areas and proximity to Sydney Road, Nicholson Street and Lygon Street. We thought it would be a great home for the next 5 years, but nearly twelve years – and two kids later - we've reluctantly accepted it's time to leave.
We have loved living here for the last twelve years, enjoying the summer stone fruits from the trees along the northern fence, picnics and BBQs in the garden, and soccer in the laneway. In winter, the sun through the living room window has provided the needed vitamin D boost on those rest days when only reading or streaming will do. Since moving in we've replaced the verandah roof, upgraded the kitchen, installed A/C in the bedroom and built the veggie boxes along the back fence.
We've enjoyed the many amenities within walking and/or cycling distance including the Merri Creek, CERES, the velodrome, parklands and the Zoo. Also, WFH lunch breaks at Sesame and Soul or Very Good Falafel, and our long-running discussion about whether Padre or A Minor Place has the best coffee. We’ve enjoyed the many eateries within strolling distance -like Old Palm Liquor, Figlia, Eleven Tigers, and Bar Idda. Living here is being spoilt for choice.
The hardest thing about moving will be saying goodbye to the warm community that exists on the street. We've watched kids grow up and people get married here. During lockdown, Ashmore Street was a supportive place as neighbours printed off worksheets for home-schooling, left deliveries of food on porches and used their one outing to check if anyone needed anything from the IGA. Pet-sitters and baby-sitters abound here. Books and power tools are loaned with great frequency, cakes and sourdoughs are regularly handed around on the street. There's an annual end of year laneway party, which lures back some former residents.
This house has held us through the birth of our two kids, protected us in lockdown and buoyed us with its light and beauty. We hope its new owners feel the warmth we have felt living here.
