Living for our future in Boroondara

If you’re wondering where Melbourne’s best suburbs are, there’s definitely no straight answer. There are benefits and attributes that make each region great and unique. But if you’re searching for a community that’s environmentally-conscious and protective of its surroundings, it’s hard to look past the City of Boroondara.

The local council has developed the Living for our Future program, which is an incredibly extensive platform that engages with the Boroondara community and encourages people to live in a way that’s sustainable. It provides a wide plethora of useful resources to schools, businesses and residents living around the area.

Want to get a closer look? The program’s website explores several topics and areas in which we can do our part. For instance, it portrays a list of foods and ingredients that have been divided into their different respective seasons. This will enable you to buy in-season vegetables and fruits that are locally grown, rather than purchasing off-season ingredients which, are generally, internationally sourced.

This in turn, it can help reduce the amount of refrigeration and energy that’s used to transport these ingredients from some far away place.

Buying produce from growers in your community helps reduce energy wastage.

The platform even has a tracker that keeps account of how much gas, water and money the Boroondara community is saving – something that serves as a great reminder that all actions toward sustainability have tangible effects.

Sustainability events coming up

There are also several events and workshops that the Living for our Future program holds throughout the year. These encourage and educate locals on ways to manage their resources and surroundings in better ways.

Growing native plants can actually help with supporting biodiversity in the area.

On February 24, there will be a workshop called Managing the Cost of Living. This presentation will cover everything from cutting down on food waste and optimising energy use, to being efficient with water and more! Not only will you be doing your part for the environment, but you’ll also be saving money.

Following up not too far behind is the Magic of Wildlife Gardening event on February 27. This session will be held by Brian Bainbridge, a gardening, revegetation and wildlife expert, and will discuss how growing native plants can actually help with supporting biodiversity in the area.

Feel inspired and want to be part of this community? If you want to have a look at real estate in Kew or any other part of Boroondara, our agents at Nelson Alexander can help you find something that fits your needs nicely. Then, you can see for yourself why it’s called the City of Harmony.
