How to spend the perfect weekend day in Fitzroy

In Melbourne – Australia’s undisputedly most hip capital city – Fitzroy may just be the coolest suburb in town.

Located just four kilometres north of the CBD, Fitzroy is the perfect place to spend a day if you want to score some op shop treasures, wander through lush gardens or simply take in the atmosphere of one of Melbourne’s oldest and most iconic suburbs.

With so much to see, you’ll want to be organised. Here are our top picks for how to spend a perfect weekend day in Fitzroy.

9:30 am – Fuel up with coffee and brekkie

Because what else would you do in Melbourne? In Fitzroy, there are hundreds of cafes to choose from, but we recommend hitting up Gertrude Street so you can admire some street art while you sip on your first – but certainly not your last – latte of the day.

Some of our favourite Gertrude Street cafes include:

11:00 am – Visit the Rose Street Artists’ Market

Once you’re sufficiently fed and caffeinated, head to the Rose Street Artists Market to browse this tiny and quintessential Fitzroy market. Everything from photography to paintings, pottery, clothing and adorable succulent plants will be up for grabs, so make sure you arrive early. The market opens at 11 am on Saturdays and Sundays, so be there by then to score some great goods and chat to local artisans.

12:30 pm – Check out the street art

Wander down Rose Street, Johnston Street and the many laneways to spot the magnificent pieces and murals by some of Melbourne’s most talented street artists such as The AWOL Crew, Rone & Rosie Woods.

2:00 pm – Grab a bite at Mile End Bagels

After all this walking you’ll surely be feeling peckish and ready for a break. Located on Johnston Street, Mile End Bagels are boiled in honey water and then baked in their wood-fire oven to achieve the perfect bagel. Their menu offers 12 different filling choices but our favorite is #4: Smoked salmon, dill & caper cream cheese, tomato & red onion (on the Dark Rye bagel).

2:30 pm – Time for some shopping

By this point, you’ll already be feeling quite inspired by some of the edgy looks you’ve seen wandering through Fitzroy, so head to Brunswick Street to find something truly unique. Brunswick Street boats heaps of amazing boutiques and secondhand stores that are all carefully curated by some of Melbourne’s best dressed.

Our favourites include Vintage SoleAlpha 60 and Kloke.

4:30 pm – Go back in time at The Everleigh

Enter via Belle’s, an American diner, walk down the hall and up the stairs and you will find yourself being whisked back in time at The Everleigh. Dedicated to classic cocktails and service and named ‘Bar of the Year’ consecutively, the Everleigh is something special. Choose a cocktail or spirit from the menu or let the waiter know what you have in mind and they’ll whisk something up.

5:00 pm –  Challenge yourself at the Mystery Rooms Melbourne

Okay, enough shopping, dining and drinking – it’s time to get to work. Escape rooms have been trending recently, and Fitzroy boasts one of the most popular in Melbourne: the Mystery Rooms. During this live team game, you will have one hour to escape a room that is packed with puzzles, clues and riddles.

There are four different themed rooms to make your way through and each is completely decked out. The Lost Tomb, for example, actually has six tonnes of sand inside.

6:00 pm – Close out the day with dinner a drink at Naked for Satan

Naked for Satan is one of Fitzroy’s best known bars. We recommend getting here in time for sunset on the rooftop bar Naked in the Sky. Naked for Satan is a Spanish themed restaurant that specialises in pintxos and vodka, so sit back, enjoy both and reminisce on your perfect day in Fitzroy.
