Mahoney House - A true Fitzroy gem!
Owners Notes
We fell in love with our home ‘Mahoney House’ five years ago. We remember walking into the house at about 4.30 in the afternoon as the sun came in through the kitchen and onto the upstairs balcony. This is it. We knew it then and we still believe it is the best spot in Fitzroy. We are only now parting ways with Mahoney as our family grows.
This house has very quickly become our home. Affectionately termed ‘our boat’ when it’s wet outside, we wind down ‘the sail’ in the side courtyard and put the fire on. With this house we have experienced the birth of our two babies at St Vincent’s Hospital. We walked them home from the hospital from the top of Fitzroy Street, past Morning Market for a cheesecake. Our babies visited Bell St coffee window before they were even wheeled in through the back gate.
We have met the finest of Fitzroy’s brilliant community, young and old, who are now considered friends. We’ve had barbecues and birthday parties spill over into the lane way, enjoyed quiet moments on the balcony watching the leaves and faintly hearing the siren from the MCG. This house has sheltered us during the longest period anyone has had to ‘stay at home’. We always talk about how lucky we were when the music stopped and we had to spend months at Mahoney Street. We only grew fonder of it.
We are often found at the Standard pub with the best beer garden in Melbourne. We are locals at Amarillo bar up the road on Brunswick Street (they make the best jalapeño margarita). We spend a lot of time at the Exhibition Gardens checking on the new ducklings in Spring and visiting Triceratops at the museum. Jo and Nick at the fruit shop on Victoria St let you eat for free what is consumed on site and are responsible for our daughter’s love of homemade honeycomb chocolate. For what you can’t get at Nick and Jo’s, Fitzroy Coles is a further two minute walk.
Mahoney House is perfectly proportioned. The bedrooms are large enough to fit everything needed. We replaced the curtains and added shutters in the rooms for a warm touch to an already thoughtfully designed house. We installed a new oven a year ago. The kitchen is a great size and functions perfectly for regular entertaining. When we can’t be bothered cooking, you can find us at Mario’s or getting tacos on Johnson Street.
We are reluctant to let go of our blue house on Mahoney Street. These walls have served us well.
