Our local suggestions to keep active during self-isolation

Whilst we all practice social distancing, self-isolation and the new normal of working from home, many of us are now mostly confined to the indoors — and chances are, you’re sitting on the comfort of your couch at home reading this. We’ve been shown for decades the importance of keeping active and in times like today, this has never been more important.

Yesterday, the Federal Government announced further restrictions on public gatherings. Unfortunately, this also means most of our favourite exercise studios (even those with outdoor classes of 10 or less) have temporarily been forced to shut their doors — luckily for us, many of them are providing an online alternative!

Some of these are free, and some are paid online classes you can book into — a great way to continue to support these businesses whilst maintaining your physical and mental health.

Here’s a list of some of our favourite digital initiatives to get us all moving:

Good Time Pilates in Fitzroy is offering ‘Real Time Good Times’ — live online mat classes 8am, 10am 5pm daily which can be booked via their website or the MindBody app.

Love Athletica in Hawthorn East, Malvern East, Prahan/Windsor have live & pre- recorded online mat & reformer classes on the way. In the interim, join them for IGTV broadcasts taking you through 20 minute Love Athletica mat classes from the Lounge of their beautiful Windsor studio.

Align Pilates Studio in Ivanhoe East have put together a series of videos safe for Pre/Post Natal and Senior clients by their instructor Eloise Chia. The series includes 4 full workouts, 1 express workout and 1 self care stretching series. Some of the workouts include small props such as light hand weights, a theraband and a pilates fit ball. The series is $50 and includes a complimentary spikey ball and theraband (valued at $20 which can be picked up from the studio), giving you access the videos for the next 6 months. Sign up via their website.

Prime Athletica in Fitzroy are offering ‘Prime Online’, band resistance workouts pre-recorded for you to follow along to at home. Two online workouts with downloadable pdfs of the workout with progressions and regressions, plus an online community for you to discuss the workouts, share recipes, music and training tips. When you sign up for Prime Online, you will receive a private link to their webpage where the videos will be streamed via Vimeo, online forum via their Facebook members page. Cost: $20 per week, opt in or out whenever you want. Bands additional if required.

If you’re an F45 member of any of F45’s studios, you can now bring their workouts into your own home by downloading the F45 challenge app — if you’re already a member, log in with your studio credentials. If you’re not — they are offering a 30 day free trial to workout at home!
