Melbourne's next "mini city" gets the go-ahead

Melbourne is an ever-changing city. It’s one of the most attractive things about looking at real estate in Carlton, Fitzroy or any other suburb – there’s plenty to see and homes to cater for virtually any taste. What’s more, the city is about to get an exciting new addition.

The Yarra City Council announced last month the development of the 16.36-hectare former Alphington Paper Mill into what it calls a “mini city”. After 18 months of consultation, the plan was approved just before Christmas, and is only pending further reassurances to protect the Yarra River and establish a community reference group.

For those looking at moving to Melbourne, or relocating between our great suburbs, there’ll be more choices than ever, with 2,500 homes set to be built for some 5,000 residents.

It means residents and house-hunters in nearby suburbs such as Northcote and Ivanhoe may find the added building supply keeps house prices steady.

The Mayor of Yarra, Roberto Colanzi, said the area will include more than just housing, and described a refreshed suburb with a community focus.

“Council has listened to our community and worked hard to ensure the development plan achieved significant outcomes, such as 4.5 per cent open space and 1,700 square metres for community facilities and a multi-purpose sports facility” he explained.

“Council has also ensured that road widths, heights and density are far improved from the original proposition and that there is an unconditional 5 per cent affordable housing element.”

Could Alphington be a strong contender for Melbourne’s best suburb? We know there’s some stiff competition across the city, and that is never a bad thing – particularly for house-buyers.
