What do you think of these five metro tunnel station designs?

In order to do away with the ‘retro metro’ of Melbourne, the city has taken on an exciting new project: the Melbourne Metro Tunnel. Slated for completion by 2025, the development will equip the city with five new metro stations, including one servicing the ever-expanding north.

Last month, the Melbourne Metro Tunnel Authority revealed concept images of the new landmarks. What do you think?

North Melbourne

Built in an area with deep industrial roots, the North Melbourne station will reflect this history. The Station will resemble the buildings that made the area prosperous, using materials such as clay brick, timber, steel and bluestone to complete a practical, strong design.

North Melbourne Station will include a cafe and outdoor dining area, as well as plenty of green spaces and public seating.

Parkville

To the north, things will be lighter and brighter at Parkville Station, thanks to glass walls and a feature roof. This will also allow visitors to take in the top-notch landscaping outside the station, which features new tree plantings, street furniture and bluestone walkways. Located near some of Melbourne’s best parks, including Princes Park and Royal Park, Parkville Station will be constructed with a keen eye to preserving the natural heritage of the area.

State Library

The Melbourne Metro Tunnel Authority anticipates a constant buzz in State Library Station, which provides access to some of Melbourne’s top tourist destinations and a growing number of student residencies. For this reason, travellers will experience a wide, spacious and easily accessible station when they make their way to RMIT, the State Library or the Queen Victoria Market Precinct.

State Library Station will feature an underground passenger connection to Melbourne Central Station, plus three convenient entrances.

Town Hall

Town Hall Station will also make use of underground connections, linking directly to Flinders Street Station. Inside, the concourse of Town Hall Station will be defined by geometric concrete columns in stunning contrast to wood panelings on the walls. The juxtaposition of wood and concrete will continue along the platforms. Space will also be made for shops and cafes outside in the revitalised city square.

Anzac

Getting off the tram at Anzac Station? You’ll be pleased the Authority plans to include a large, sloping canopy offering respite from the elements in a city that often experiences four seasons in one day. Anzac Station’s direct train/tram interchange will help those transiting along St. Kilda Road and Swanston Street – the busiest tram corridor in the world.

Design-wise, Anzac Station will be built in a similar style to other key Melbourne landmarks in the area, including the stately Shrine of Remembrance.
